It’s not just a rock. It’s forty-two pounds of polished granite, with a beveled underbelly and a handle a human being can hold. Okay, so in and of itself it looks like it has no practical purpose, but it’s a repository of possibility. And, when it’s handled just right, it exacts a kind of poetry – as close to poetry as I ever want to get. The way it moves . . . Not once, in everything I’ve done, have I ever felt the same wonder and humanity as when I’m playing the game of curling. — from Men with Brooms
That’s a curling stone up there (I didn’t take that picture, but I wish I had). David LOVES curling. He’s been talking about watching curling during the Olympics since, like, October. I have been rolling my eyes since, like, October. He taped the U.S. and Canadian Olympic Curling Trials. I tried to watch with him, but I was bored to tears. He’s been watching curling every day at work using NBC’s streaming video, and he’s been giving me a play-by-play by IM. I really haven’t cared that much.
In the paper one day this week, there was a feature on curling, and it turns out there’s a curling club not too far from here. They were hosting an open house all day today where people could sign up for free (read: donation requested) instruction. Because I’m an awesome girlfriend, I signed us up for 12:30, then told him about it. He pretended to be reluctant.
It turns out that curling is kind of cool. I am awful; I can’t seem to make my legs do what they are supposed to do, and the stone is harder to throw than they make it look on TV. David seemed to pick it up well, so I was glad for him. We had a great time, laughing at each other while we were learning, and we even ended up joining the club. We will be participating in a beginners curling league starting March 5th – 5 Fridays in a row for two hours or so, with an hour of instruction beforehand each night. We got our own “personal sliders,” which you slip on over your street shoe so that one foot is slippery while the other (uncovered) is grippy. If we get really into it, I presume we’d buy special curling shoes, but for now, this is perfect. (Note: one of the things on my 101 in 1001 list is “join a bowling league.” I may exercise my supreme power and call that done with this. The point was to join a league of some kind and play a game with strangers regularly; this fits the spirit of the item, and that’s good enough for me!)
Here are some pictures from today (David asked me not to post the ones of him; sorry):

It’s cold enough in there that you need gloves and a jacket; also, they have shelves along the wall that act as a refrigerator, so that should give you some idea of just how cold it is.
I’m looking forward to this – I think it’s exciting to try something new! I’ll keep you posted on our progress!
P.S. the title of this post comes from a pin they were giving out at the open house today, and which I just realized I still have on!

Oh my gosh – my only excuse for not posting this yesterday is that the 7th day of not working in a row (due to snow, the weekend, and more snow) made me lose track of what day it was! Here’s this week’s list:
1. Project Runway, back in New York
2. the anticipation of the Princess and Conductor coming to visit overnight tomorrow – I’m taking them to see Disney on Ice!
3. Black Cherry Citrus Fresca – I was getting tired of caffeine-free Diet Coke and caffeine-free Diet Dr. Pepper and decided try this when it was on sale at the store last week – it’s yummy!
